about

Paul Ilechko wrote the mysterious and evocative lyrics and I came up with a tune. David Harbottle devised the beautiful arrangement, which captures the mood of the song. David is joined by Freya Jonas and Annie Baylis to create this lovely performance.

lyrics

Billy was flying, his head on the verge of exploding
Clouds overhead were turning to gray and then black
In hope of a better life
He left the child on a northbound train
Now he was lonesome out there in the rain

And the rain fell clean and strong
He felt its power carry him on
he was alone out there in the rain

He dreamed of water that poured
through the windows above him
Gushing and splashing it rose ever higher
His heart so cold
As rain turned to ice pelting his body again
Looking for something out there in the rain

Passing though time as the years
fell like leaves from an oak tree
measuring life in truth and its absence
without any hope
he searched for the child across hundreds of towns in vain
the rest of his life would be spent in the rain

I help run the Uxbridge Folk Club and perform in local sing-arounds. ... more
