about

The track was produced and arranged by Lukas Drinkwater. Lukas played all the instruments. The vocals were shared by Lukas and Lizzy Hardingham. Many thanks to them for making this project real.

This is a true story. Alison was a police officer in Halifax, suffered an awful car crash in a high-speed chase, moved to France where she renovated an old farm house, doing a lot of the construction herself. She ran song-writing workshops at the farm. This song the is the output of one such workshop.

Most of the song-writing credit should go to the tutors of the workshop but they have instructed me to put my name to song.

lyrics

A Cop in a car was the life for me,
Attached to the force but feeling free
Take to the road with a pal by my side
young and keen With a ton of pride

Sometimes we share a joke and a laugh
Sometime we go down a darker path
But always the feeling of being the one
To do a good job when all’s said and done

One day a call came down the line
Catch this crook I’ll make him mine
Blues and twos with sirens and lights
Over the hill with the car in sight

A high speed chase Starsky and Hutch
Snake round the bend, punish the clutch
Tailspin slide takes the car off the tracks
Onto its side and down on its back

Thrill to the chase on the silver screen
Out in the world the streets are mean
Thrill to the chase on the edge of fear
Not when it ends a valiant Career

Blow my top, ditch my boots
Close this chapter and pull my roots
A job with a  built-in on adrenaline rush
Now gives way to a kind of hush

France in Summer the hum of the bees
Apples  are ripening on the Orchard trees
Haze that reaches right up to sky
From the kitchen wafts the  smell of a pie

The Chase is a distant memory
of the morning bell and boulangerie
they set the tone for rest of the day
on the Road to the farm as I make my way

Sweep away mists over cornfields a rising
Beckon me down to my crops I’ll be gathering
Shine on the my roofs and windows glistening
Bring warmth to my family they’re still sleeping

Crime is a word no more in use
In this corner of France there reigns a truce
Though sometimes the piece is disturbed of course
By a cheeky and mischievous horse

Get out of bed there a floor to lay
A roof to tile make a door for hay
Knock a hole in the wall let in the light
Plaster that wall get the ceiling right

Get out of bed I’m on a mission
School run’s due got to feed musicians
Down to store buy food in plenty
cram the car when I’m feeding twenty

Adieu to Yorkshire leave the Dales behind
Start a new life to find piece of mind
Retire to France got a quiet place
Still feel like a cop in high speed chase

Always enjoyed the singer-songwriters such as Al Stewart and Michael Chapman, and now write some songs myself. My album Viewpoints was recorded with help from Dave Nachmanoff and Lukas Drinkwater. I help run the Uxbridge Folk Club and perform in local sing-arounds. ... more
