about

To The Sky was written in response to a song-writing challenge "Hope in a Time of Crisis", in November 2020. This is my first collaboration with poet Paul Ilechko. Paul wrote the lyrics and I set them to music. I liked the result so much that I asked Dave Nachmanoff and Lizzy Hardingham to record the song.

lyrics

Cities can squeeze you to their shape
Crooked and narrow as any alleyway
And there between the walls we can sit and wait
Wondering if change might come today
Wondering if change might come today

Or we can stand up in defiance
And hold our heads up high
Though inanity surrounds us
We'll raise our voices one more time
And sing our hope into the sky

The countryside indifferent to your path
Through stubble fields towards the naked trees
With only damaged sky for company
wondering if today will set us free
wondering if today will set us free

Like children of some strange purgatory
In suburbs proud with tailored grass
a sad perfection of sterility
no wonder here, just hankering for the past
no wonder here, just hankering for the past

We stand here in defiance
and hold our heads up high
we’re taking back the future
we raise our voices one more time
and sing our hope into the sky

Dave Artus London, UK

I'm a semi-retired IT person, originally from Bingley in Yorkshire, now living in Ruislip, West London. Always enjoyed the singer-songwriters such as Al Stewart and Michael Chapman, and now write some songs myself. My album Viewpoints was recorded with help from Dave Nachmanoff and Lukas Drinkwater. I help run the Uxbridge Folk Club and perform in local sing-arounds. ... more
